Following Jesus: The Adventure Hidden in Everyday Life

Many people, even though they desire to live for Jesus, find themselves walking around as if on autopilot. We love the Lord, believe in Him, and aspire to honor Him, yet our days can become filled with routines, responsibilities, and distractions. Before long, we can begin to feel as though we're being led by our daily demands instead of being led by the Lord.

In his self-titled gospel, Matthew describes a day when he was going about his normal routine, working at his booth as a tax collector, when a rather unexpected occurrence interrupted his day. A man named Jesus approached him and simply said, “Come, follow me.” Regardless of the randomness of this unplanned invitation, Matthew immediately jumped up and followed Him. That night, which again was not an everyday occurrence, Jesus went back to Matthew’s house and had dinner with him.

I love this picture.

Matthew didn't know where following Jesus would lead. He simply responded to His invitation.

I believe Jesus still extends those same invitations today, to us, while we’re going about our normal daily routines.

Sometimes His invitation may be to go for a walk and enjoy His presence. Sometimes, He may invite us to sit quietly with Him and be still. Perhaps He is prompting us to call a friend, or encourage someone who is struggling. Just as Jesus entered Matthew's house, perhaps He is inviting us to make space for people around our own tables.

What if Jesus is far more present in your day than you realize?

What if the ordinary moments—the walk around the neighborhood, the conversation at the dinner table, the quiet moments in the morning—are actually opportunities to encounter Him?

The Holy Spirit is constantly at work in our lives. He ministers to us, guides us, comforts us, and gently speaks to our hearts. But we can easily miss His invitations if we rush through our days without awareness of His presence.

Living with Jesus is not supposed to be boring. It is an adventure. Not because every day is dramatic, but because every day holds the possibility of walking with our King.

The invitation for each of us is simple: become more aware of His presence. Lean in to listen when He speaks. Pay attention to His gentle prompts. Respond with trust.

Just as Matthew rose from his booth and followed when Jesus called, we too can choose to respond to His invitations.

Today, take a moment to pause and ask, "Jesus, what are You inviting me into right now?" He is always leading those who are willing to follow.

‘As Jesus left Capernaum he came upon a tax-collecting station, where a Jewish man named Matthew was collecting taxes for the Romans. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said to him. Immediately Matthew jumped up and began to follow Jesus. Matthew 9:9 (TPT)
